when it's not quid pro quo

Yesterday, an old friend's brother helped me with something important. Something I really needed help with. And he was incredibly, startlingly kind in the process.

He doesn't need anything from me. The only thing I can offer in return is gratitude.

I wrote yesterday morning about supporting our children's joy in giving. And now I'm ruminating about how it's so important to know how to accept a gift, too--to say yes to a gift that's given freely and without expectation. It can be hard to do.

I love you. And I would like to remind you again today, just as I was reminded by this friend's brother who I haven't seen in 20 years: You are not alone.
